Consultation on Retirement Villages Bill Welcomed

Media Release - Wednesday 25th February 2015

COTA SA and the South Australian Retirement Villages Residents' Association (SARVRA) have welcomed the release of the draft Retirement Villages Bill released this week by Minister for the Ageing Zoe Bettison and urged the community to provide comments on the draft.

COTA SA Chief Executive Jane Mussared said COTA SA would be examining the draft bill closely, but that at first sight it boosted important protections for residents.

‘The draft bill reflects much of the feedback provided by village residents and older South Australians,' she said.

‘It adds to important initiatives already undertaken by the state government, including funding an advocacy service for village residents and creating better-practice guidelines for use within retirement villages.'

President of SARVRA, Pamela Judge, congratulated the state government and in particular the Office for the Ageing on the extensive consultation undertaken to date.

‘This draft bill is the result of the input of many people in our SARVRA community. Following this final round of consultation, it is our hope that the bill will be tabled as quickly as possible to ensure better consumer protections for retirement village residents,' she said.

‘We are keen to see reforms in a number of areas such as greater transparency around management fees and head office costs, better clarity on exit fees and processes, and protections against misleading advertising.

‘We urge as many residents as possible to contribute to the consultation.'

COTA SA and SARVRA will jointly host focus groups on the draft bill in both regional and metropolitan South Australia. Details will be announced on the COTA SA website (www.cotasa.org.au) in the coming weeks. You can also send your comments directly via the COTA SA website.

Consultation on the draft bill closes 5pm on Friday 24 April 2015. To see the draft bill or provide comment to the government, please visit http://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/reviewsandconsultation/.
