Farewell to Ian Yates AM

Media Release Thursday 9th July 2015

The Premier, Hon Jay Weatherill, today joined former Premier, Hon Dean Brown and many others, to farewell from South Australia the long standing Chief Executive of COTA SA, Ian Yates AM.

Ian was the Chief Executive of COTA SA from 1989 until 2013.

COTA SA President, Professor Anne Edwards AO, acknowledged Ian's enormous contribution to older people and to the broader South Australian community.

"For more than 20 years Ian has occupied significant public roles in South Australia and has significantly influenced ageing and aged care as well as health, higher education and community welfare," Professor Edwards said.

"Ian has provided consistent, clever and change oriented leadership as COTA SA has championed the rights and aspirations of older South Australians, redefining the expectations and opportunities that our ageing brings," said Professor Edwards.

This exceptional leadership resulted in Ian being appointed in 2013 as the Chief Executive of COTA Australia, the national peak organisation representing older people. Ian will move to Canberra this month.

"It is a measure of Ian's standing in South Australia that over the last decade he has also been Deputy Chancellor of Flinders University; Chair of the Cancer Council SA; Deputy Chair of the Repatriation General Hospital in SA; Deputy Chair of the SA Council of Social Service; Board Member of the Southern Adelaide Health Service; Board Member of the Flinders Medical Centre; and a member of the SA Government's Health Performance Council."

Ian holds an Honorary Doctorate and is Emeritus Deputy Chancellor of Flinders University, and was awarded Membership in the Order of Australia (AM) in June 2005.
