Oakden report released today

The ICAC Report into the Oakden aged care facility was released today.

What occurred at Oakden is nothing short of a tragedy and the release of the ICAC report again confirms that. The way we care for vulnerable and disempowered older citizens is a true measure of our society. The abuse, neglect, poor practices and appalling conditions suffered by residents of Oakden will forever be a shameful blight on our state's history.

The report also cemented our view that we need to act now to ensure that something like this never occurs again. COTA SA supports the Commissioner's recommendations for much tighter and clearer accountability for the people who lead mental health services for older people, and for continuing work to fix our model of care, and address shortfalls in culture, workforce skills, governance and accreditation in all our services. For whoever forms government on March 17th, this must take absolute priority.

COTA SA released a media statement following the report, which you can read in full here https://www.cotasa.org.au/news/NewsList/2018/oakden-must-never-happen-again-says-cotasa.aspx

Shape the future of health and wellbeing in northern Adelaide - Healthia

In late 2017, The Plug-in community shared their experiences about health and wellbeing in the northern suburbs to help shape a new precinct, Healthia, which will be developed next to the Lyell McEwin Hospital.

An ACH Group development, Healthia will offer apartments, residential aged care and disability services for residents in the northern suburbs, and partner with other providers to deliver services and facilities to the local community.

Our Plug-in Influencers are working with ACH Group to understand what is important to the community in terms of health and wellbeing, open and built space, and the programs and services that will be offered there in future.

Phase 2 of the project is now commencing and there is an opportunity to provide input on the types of retail, health, hospitality and community services you want to see at the newest major health and wellness precinct in the north.

If you access (or support someone to access) health, aged care or disability services in the around Playford, Salisbury, and Gawler regions, the Plug-in would love to hear from you! We would also like to hear from people from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds, so if you know of an individual or community group that would be interested in participating then please let us know.

Participants will be asked to contribute via focus groups and 1:1 interviews, and will be offered a $25 gift card to thank them for their time.

Register your interest by visiting theplugin.com.au, emailing connect@theplugin.com.au or calling 8224 5582.

The Plug-in Projects Update

Over at The Plug-in we have been busy supporting national work led by COTA Australia to explore Quality and Safety in Aged Care. This research followed The Review of National Aged Care Quality Regulatory Processes, led by Kate Carnell AO, which was released to the public on 25 October 2017.

The project involved a series of focus groups and interviews throughout November and December 2017 to discover what information is most important when making decisions about their aged care, and what supports would better assist people navigating the aged care system.

Key findings from South Australia identified main themes including services that support dignity, self-expression and choice; quality of life; care that meets individual needs; listening and responding to the voice of consumers and families; accurate and transparent systems and fees; and leadership that puts consumers at the centre.

Sensorimotor Control Across The Lifespan

The University of Adelaide are currently running a set of experiments investigating hand eye coordination across the lifespan.

They are seeking participants aged 60 years and above to participate an experiment conducted at the University of Adelaide. The experiment will involve making reaching movement towards a touch screen monitor where a target will be displayed. In this project we will be tracking your eye movements and hand movements with special cameras and sensors while you are sitting in front of the computer.

For more information or to arrange a suitable time see https://www.cotasa.org.au/requests/items/sensori-motor-control-across-the-lifespan.aspx
