Welcome to 2018
Welcome to 2018, and congratulations to those of you who made new year resolutions to learn or do something new. Your resolution just might be wavering given it is now about a fortnight old! I read somewhere that new habits take at least 6 weeks so stay at it...
At COTA SA, we are very ambitious for 2018. Our main current focus is putting the finishing touches on the Tell Us What Matters platform in time for the State Election on March 17th.
The Board is also developing a new Strategic Plan with priorities on continuing to build our reach, our viability and our impact. The COTA SA Policy Council will set its priorities at its first meeting in March - employment, housing, preventing isolation and health services that work continue to be major areas in our surveying but road safety and staying mobile is also emerging as a priority.
The Plug-in is going from strength to strength as a movement that enables older people to be influential in shaping modern ageing.
ZestFest will offer its second year of community and arts events in partnership with local communities and some our states best cultural institutions and festivals. It aims to rewrite our ageing - let's use it and love it.
It's great to have you on board - we look forward to staying in touch!

COTA SA's response to the Safeguarding The Rights Of Older South Australians Discussion Paper 2017
There remain considerable shortcomings in the adequacy of the system to protect older people from abuse - including in the breadth and effectiveness of prevention strategies, in the legal protection and redress available for older people who are vulnerable, in what could be achieved in cooperation with other jurisdictions to achieve a national framework and plan, and in the services that older people should be able to access to stop abuse.
COTA SA welcomes the Discussion Paper as the next step in understanding, reviewing and improving our community's responses to older people who experience abuse but notes that the next stage of reforms to tackle elder abuse are both substantial and urgent.
