Do you receive support through a Home Care Package or know someone who does? From the 1st July 2015 all Home Care Packages will be delivered on a Consumer Directed Care (CDC) basis.

What does this mean? It means you should be more involved at the outset in having a say about what support you need and how you would like it provided.

You will know what budget is available for your level of package (made up of the Government subsidy and your contribution), and set your own priorities about how this is spent. You will have a chance to think about the things you would like to be able to do and how your Home Care Package can assist. You can have as little or as much say as you wish, and ask someone to represent you if you do not want to direct the package yourself.

Remember:

  • It’s your life and your choice
  • You have the right to have your wishes for lifestyle and support respected
  • Work in partnership with your provider to get the support you need
  • Information and assistance is available to help you with your decisions.

While everyone is getting used to these changes, CDC may not always operate as it has been intended to. You should talk with your provider if you are not happy. If you cannot sort out the issues you can get the support of an advocate by phoning 1800 700 600 or call the Aged Care Complaints Service on 1800 55- 552.

If you feel you have been disadvantaged by the changes to CDC you can ask the Department of Social Services for a review of your situation by calling 1800 138 225. More information is available through My Aged Care, phone 1800 200 422 or www.myagedcare.gov.au.  More information about CDC is available at www.homecaretoday.org.au.

COTA SA also runs Peer Education sessions on CDC - if you're interested in hosting a session at your group visit our CDC Information and Booking form page. Alternatively, if you'd like to get together with other people over morning tea to share and learn how to make the most of your Home Care Package, COTA SA is hosting Conversations About Home Care on the 2nd of July and you're invited to come along.
